Preface

This section will give you a quickstart at Bforartists. A 3D software is highly complex. And so there is lots to learn. And the first steps are usually the hardest. That's why this section exists. To make this entry as easy as possible.

But also experienced users first needs to find their way into Bforartists. Especially when you come from Blender. Remember, Bforartists is a fork of Blender. The most significant change is the keymap. Blender users are used to the Blender keymap. Two posibilities here. Switch back to the Blender Keymap and save the startup file. Then you can go on as usual. Of course within the bounds of Bforartists.

Or you get used to the Bforartists keymap :)

The Bforartists keymap has some significant changes. It has nearly no hotkeys for tools anymore. The way to use Bforartists is the graphical menu. And Navigation happens now with W E and R. And not longer with G, R and S.

For the beginning i suggest to turn on the Important Hotkeys addon. It shows you the most used hotkeys and how they are mapped.

Most important changes compared to the Blender keymap:

  • Nearly all tools that has a menu entry are hotkey free now. Which allows the user to assign single key hotkeys for most important tools again.

  • RMB is rotating the viewport. MMB is panning the viewport. CTRL + MMB or Scrollwheel is zooming the viewport.

  • Translate, Rotate and Scale the selection are now mapped to W, E and R instead of G, R and S

  • Extrude is now S, since the E key is occupied by the new navigation keys.

  • Click Extrude for Bone extrude is remapped from Ctrl Action Mouse to Ctrl Select Mouse. Which is LMB now. Easier to handle.

  • Special menus are completely gone. It's content was mostly double entries. And i redistributed the few cases where it was no double entry into the traditional menus.

  • Hotkeys to toggle modes are gone. Like to toggle the transform orientation, or to cycle through the snap elements. Or most prominent: the nonsense tab hotkey to jump between the last used modes, like object and edit mode.

  • Most panels that could be called by hotkey are gone. Still there is P for Parent and U for UV Mapping.

  • Circle Select is now G. I needed to remap it since Y, X and C are used to switch between the mesh select modes.

  • Switching between mesh select modes is now Y, X and C

  • Switching between modes is key 1 to 7

  • To toggle the 3D widget is Q

There are still a ton of hotkeys left in the input manager. But this is because there ALL input is defined. Not only calling the tools. For a complete overview of the remaining hotkeys have a look in the Bforartists Keymap documentation:

The quickstart videos gives you a quick run through the most important features in Bforartists by modeling, texturing and rendering a simple table. It is not meant to be a complete guide. 3D is simply too complex to cover every aspect in a few minutes.
